What is the claim amount? What are the regulations?

Experiencing the disappointment of not seeing your suitcase appear on the baggage carousel is a common occurrence in air travel. Your checked baggage may have been misplaced or failed to be loaded onto your connecting flight in a timely manner. Regardless of the cause, dealing with lost baggage is always a hassle.

What to Do If Your Luggage Is Lost?

What steps should be taken if your baggage is delayed or lost?

Primarily, report the delayed baggage right away, before leaving the airport.

If you notice a delay in receiving your baggage, promptly notify the representative at the baggage claim area. To report a lost bag, ensure you have your passport, boarding pass, and baggage tag (usually attached to your boarding pass during check-in). While it’s not mandatory, providing a photo of your suitcase is advisable. However, if you don’t have one, a thorough description of your suitcase will be sufficient.

The airline representative will record your contact details and provide you with a Property Irregularity Report or PIR (it’s a baggage report) containing a tracking number. Save this document. You will need it for tracking purposes later.

In most instances, lost baggage is tracked within the first 24 hours. Once your baggage is traced, the airline will get in touch with you to schedule its delivery.

Tracking Your Lost Baggage

You have been given a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport that contains a tracking number. Retain this document as it will be required to track your baggage.

To monitor the status of your misplaced bag, utilise the airline’s online baggage tracing system. The details of this system will be shared with you when you report your lost bag. Crucial information like your name and PIR are needed to access the baggage tracing service.

Note that the number on your baggage tag is not identical to the PIR number.

Baggage Delayed For 5+ Days

If your baggage hasn’t been located within five days since you reported its delay, it’s time to reach out to the airline to provide them with a thorough description of your item and its contents. This can be done by filling out a form on the airline’s baggage status page, which becomes accessible five days post your delay report.

You will be given all the details when completing a report at the airport.

Reimbursement of Expenses

Keep in mind that delayed baggage compensation means reimbursement of expenses in case of baggage delay.

Take note that you may receive reimbursement for essential expenses such as toiletries, required clothing, and underwear in the case of lost checked baggage. It’s crucial that you keep all your receipts as they are necessary when submitting a claim. Only basic necessities qualify for reimbursement.

The deadline for filing a claim is 21 days from the day you receive your delayed baggage.

Reimbursement for expenses is often called “delayed baggage compensation”.

Lost Baggage (You Can Get Compensation)

Croatia Airlines has a window of 21 days to track down and return your baggage.

If your delayed bag isn’t found within 21 days, it’s officially declared lost. When this occurs, you have the right to lodge a compensation claim with the airline.

Compensation can be up to €1300.

Note that it’s unwise to check in items such as electronics, artwork, jewellery, etc., as Croatia Airlines (or any other airline for that matter) isn’t responsible for compensating the full value of these items, only to the extent outlined by the Montreal Convention and their Conditions of Carriage.

To submit a claim, you need to present your boarding pass, baggage tags, and the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) that contains your reference number. If you’ve incurred additional expenses while your bag was missing, these can be claimed by submitting the corresponding receipts.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

Is securing travel insurance prior to your journey crucial?

It’s a subjective question, the answer to which largely depends on individual circumstances.

While it’s not obligatory to prove insurance coverage when filing a baggage claim, it is strongly advisable to consider travel insurance before setting off on your journey.

This can provide you with a sense of security during your travels, knowing that you’re covered should unexpected inconveniences arise. Moreover, certain travel insurance policies can be surprisingly affordable. Hence, it’s worth exploring the option of travel insurance or leveraging a travel debit/credit card that offers insurance benefits.

If your baggage is lost or delayed due to the airline’s fault, your insurance policy might cover refunds for necessary purchases, potentially simplifying the process compared to liaising with the airline directly.

Remember to talk with your insurer before making any purchases and retain all receipts as proof of purchase. Gaining insights into your policy’s coverage details, such as the inclusion of baggage delay coverage, is crucial.

Travel Prepared

Being ready for the chances of luggage delay or loss is vital.

Ensure to pack a set of clothing and undergarments in your carry-on bag to tide you over in such cases. This is particularly essential when your destination has a tropical climate, necessitating appropriate attire and swimwear.

Additionally, it’s always a wise idea to carry medications and items of value in your carry-on, providing a safety net if your checked baggage goes missing.

What is your experience with baggage delays on Croatia Airlines flights? Has Croatia Airlines ever lost your baggage? Have you ever applied for “Croatia Airlines delayed baggage compensation” (reimbursement of expenses in case of baggage delay)?

Please note that the rules for compensation for lost or delayed baggage with Croatia Airlines are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Croatia Airlines and other airlines globally.
